Vice President of Cloud Software Engineering

Sensity Systems is seeking a seasoned development executive to lead all cloud software engineering.  Sensity is leveraging the global upgrade of 4 billion outdoor lights to LED to deploy a sensor network and cloud-based application platform to improve public safety, deliver greater  efficiency, and generally improve the lives of city-dwellers.  Sensity has forged a leadership role in defining the standard for Smart City software platforms and has deployed the system with cities around the world.  In this critical role, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, you will lead a growing development organization and be responsible for defining and executing a plan to fulfill an ambitious product roadmap.  

Responsibilities:

  • Define and continually enhance Sensity’s cloud software development systems and programs
  • Infuse agile development best practices and wisdom throughout the organization
  • Lead, coach, and inspire a team of talented software developers and test engineers
  • Develop and evolve foundational development programs, including release engineering, test frameworks, build and branching, and more. 
  • Execute Sensity’s open source strategy, becoming a global leader in Smart City platform architectures
  • Evaluate, select and manage technology vendors and partners required for successful implementation of cloud software development
  • Work closely with product management, hardware/embedded software engineering and the CTO to ensure that development is efficiently meeting the objectives of the company
  • Serve as a key strategic thought partner to the management team, helping inform overall company strategy 

Skills & Ideal Experience:

  • 10+ years experience creating and or rapidly expanding development operations, systems, and practices in a respected software product development company
  • 15+ years delivering software to end customers, with emphasis on enterprise SaaS solutions
  • Proven ability to define a clear vision and development plan that is challenging, but achievable and motivating to your team
  • Track record of exceptional personal results, routinely setting and meeting commitments that are a stretch for others
  • Proven success building and leading a development organization within a high-growth environment, attracting and retaining top talent
  • Passion for high-quality software development and the technology and knowledge that supports it
  • Experience working with software managing networked devices at large scale
  • Deep experience in Agile development with ability to assess team and manager’s agile practices
  • Adroit and nimble strategic thinker who can incorporate rapidly evolving market dynamics into the development process
  • Experience with using open source as part of engineering projects. Possible roles include:
    • consuming open source technologies in engineering projects
    • managing open source license compliance, including software redistribution
    • organizing the contribution of internally developed software to existing ("upstream") projects
    • open-sourcing software as a new project, including managing community participation
    • participating in a larger "big tent" open source activity such as OpenStack, OpenDaylight, CloudFoundry, and taking an administrative or governance role
  • Experience in engineering projects, which involve significant security and privacy requirements, including familiarity with control frameworks, audit and compliance
  • Experience in managing the relationship between engineering and operations, and alternative models for software release. Familiarity with the strengths and weaknesses of DevOps and CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment)
  • Experience in real-time, globally distributed, high-volume data storage & exchange systems
  • Experience in dealing with distributed teams and subcontractor teams
  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, or equivalent experience
